  1. From this video, it was easy to see just how far white Americans will go in order to prevent African Americans from bettering themselves. Even after slavery was outlawed, they still found ways to hold them back. They jeopardized their way of living, their jobs, or even tried to imprison them for petty crimes. It is obvious that their hatred was fueled by nothing more than power, greed, and the need to feel superior. It is sad and sickening to know my people went through these times.

  2. After watching this video, I learned that even after African Americans were freed from slavery white southerners found any way to put them back in the same position of slavery they were punished and locked away from crimes that weren’t major. Even after some African American time was up from working white southerners will still make them over work and if they wouldn’t listen then the white southerners would threaten them which wasn’t right. After watching this video it made me pretty upset and it’s crazy because some of this stuff is still going on today with the whole police brutality just the system in general

    1. I agree with your post Dalyne. I believe slavery and prison are parallel with one another, especially after slavery was abolished. Many black men, women, and children were suffering from different forms of slavery, yet white people found a different name for it–prison.

  3. In the video I was getting that even if these former slaves were free they were punished or locked away for little petty crimes. For example they would be punished or put in jail for talking loud around white women. Some were put to work and had to sign contracts as punishment. Some where still being sold or traded. Slave holders would be the ones to punish these former slaves and that would leave the courts to punish the whites.

  4. Laws such as the Black Codes were used to put African Americans into this work system. In addition to this many men and women could be taken when alone due to “owing money”. This is the same as when slaves would be taken from the north to the south due to the fugitive slave act. Also the work leasing system was a way to produce the cheapest form of labor. The South was trying to get things as close to how they were before 1863 as possible.
