I Have Seen It All Now!!!!: An Encounter with a Nigerian Trump Supporter

Yesterday, while driving to the gym, I found myself at a red light behind a vehicle with vanity plates that read Trummp. Yes, whoever was driving the car was so committed to displaying their allegiance to Donald J. Trump that they were willing to appear illiterate to the entire world.

Although it is not easy to identify a driver through a tinted back window. Yet, I was sure of what I had seen. My eyes told my brain that the driver must have been a member of the 80s R&B group Full Force because he had on some oversized stunner shades. Texturized hair shaped into a box haircut like Big Daddy Kane wore through the ’80s and ’90s. This person would have made a quantum leap in time if my eyes had not deceived me.

I was glad we both went into the same strip mall and appeared to be heading to the gym. I would soon have a clear view of who was driving the older model vehicle.

And you know what?

My eyes had not lied to me. The dark-skinned brother who emerged from the vehicle had on stunner shades, a very colorful shirt, far too tight pants, and enough gold to be mistaken for Mr. T. I recognized him as a regular at the gym and plotted to find an opening that would allow me to ask him if he were a Trump or is it Trummp supporter.

Although I rarely talk to anyone at the gym, I knew this brother spoke to any and everyone. Today would be the day that I engaged him.

In between sets, I learned he was Nigerian and a proud Trump supporter. He laughed at the mention of his misspelled license plate; the correct spelling was unavailable. I intently listened as he attempted to rationally explain his political position. He talked about economic benefits, his agreeance that all immigrants needed to be removed, the irony here was too much for me to stand, and his Christian duty. I attempted to delve into this brother’s logic by asking him why he thought most Blacks supported Harris and had been somewhat wedded to the Democratic Party since the 1934 off-year election of FDR’s first Presidential tenure.

I am unsure if I was more startled or saddened by his response.

In his opinion, the only reason Blacks supported Harris was because of Race, not substantive policy projections, and their refusal to abandon the Democratic Party was attributable to collective laziness. Such disrespect from Continental Africans has never sat well in my spirit, and I have rarely been able to resist the compulsion to hold my peace.

My counter to his ahistorical statements offended him. Anger was stitched across his face when I told him that his African ass would not be here had it not been for those lazy Blacks. He was bewildered by my assertion that morality, decency, and socially responsible individualism have rarely been applied, let alone monopolized by white Christians. Such values have been drilled into the minds of Blacks who attend any semblance of a legitimate Black church. I took the scenic route in explaining to him that he was a fool for throwing his support behind a lot of far-right racists whose language, antics, and intentions have forced traditional Republican Party members to abandon ship.

I closed my rant with the following request for all non-white Trump supporters. When those folks show you what they really think about you, stand there and take that disrespect, and you should not look for our assistance.

Rest assured that the so-called Christian Nationalist train that Trump is guiding is never late. It definitely never misses a stop when it comes to delivering unconscionable disrespect for non-Blacks who are not willing to openly accept them monopolizing anything worth having in this nation.

Uncivilized, Uncontrollable, and Ungovernable: A Black Man’s Perspective of Trump Supporters Storming of the Capitol

In the wake of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963, then Nation of Islam Spokesman Malcolm X referenced the killing in the following manner.

I’m a good ol’ country boy and it ain’t never made me sad, its always made me glad when the chickens come home to roost.

Of course, this was Brother Malcolm’s way of saying that the violence America has allowed, and even perpetrated worldwide, has finally circled and taken out its Commander-in-Chief.

There may not be a more appropriate description of what we saw today as thousands of Trump supporters asininely attempted to execute a coup in the nation’s Capital. I cannot join political commentators, politicians, and naïve American citizens as they express shock and outrage at Donald J. Trump’s reckless language and the subsequent actions of persons marred by historic historical illiteracy and astounding ignorance regarding the political process of a nation that they profess to cherish. I am unmoved by today’s events.

As a Black man who has lived in a nation controlled by powerful Whites and even harassed by White non-elites, I long ago realized that the words uncivilized, uncontrollable, and ungovernable fit many of my White countrymen like a tailored suit. Do not be unduly dissuaded into believing that what you witnessed today is the exception to the rule. This is the standard behavior of such people.

I find it impossible to believe that a single Black person was surprised at the deplorable antics of adrenaline-filled Whites who have been convinced, without a shred of evidence, I might add, that their foremost inheritance, the United States of America, is being stolen from them. Whites have been convinced for the longest time that Abraham Lincoln’s words that “America is a nation that was created by Whites and should always serve the interests of Whites” is the baseline of their existence. Such thinking serves as the impetus behind an unmistakable preference to rule in hell rather than serve in heaven. Any attempt to wrestle what they have convinced themselves is their birthright from them reveals them as an uncivilized, uncontrollable, and ungovernable lot.

Although most are shocked by Trump supporters forced entry into the Capitol to halt the electoral vote, the truth of the matter is that this is not the first time that Whites have behaved in such a manner during the past four years. They have stormed State Capitol’s before with guns in hand. In fact, it would be fair to state that this type of behavior should be expected by angry misguided Trump supporters devoid of any semblance of civility.

Although I am not shocked by their antics, I do not blame them alone for this situation. I blame reasonable-minded yet cowardly Whites who have turned a blind eye to the behavior of this uncivilized, uncontrollable, and ungovernable lot. Of course, it is easy for well-meaning Whites to ignore what amounts to social cancer as long as it ravages Black and Brown bodies, not their own. The deplorable conduct of our countrymen should have been addressed long ago. Yet, the powers that be allowed the alluded to domestic terrorism to grow unchecked.

Let’s be honest about from whence these actions come. Domestic terrorism by Whites predates the founding of America and continues to the present moment. Marauding lawless, uncontrollable, and ungovernable Whites have lynched others, including some Whites that they disagreed with, burned bodies, raped, and ruled by unbridled force. It is who they are. In this nation, we must never forget that the unofficial mantra for who rules is summed up in the thought that “might equals right.”

So, you must excuse this Black man for being somewhat amused at today’s events, because much like Malcolm X, “I’m a good ol’ country boy and it ain’t never made me sad, its always made me glad when the chickens come home to roost.

When The Chickens Come Home to Roost: The Poetic Justice Associated with the Coronavirus for American Elites

With the benefit of hindsight, I am sure that I got on my close friend Regina Alhassan’s last nerve by repeating the phrase “Maybe God is trying to tell you something.” My frequent use of that popular axiom was meant to serve as a not so subtle push that would result in her mustering the courage to become the entrepreneur that everyone except for her believed was her destiny.

Regina Alhassan is one of my closest female friends, we attended THE Ohio State University together and have managed to maintain our connection through the unpredictable twists-and-turns of life. At times we have been each other’s confidant, cheerleader, and critic. It was during one of these moments that called for harsh criticism that I expressed my foremost frustration with my dear friend. She, like the vast majority of people, placed unnecessary limits on herself that muted prodigious talents and genius for the stability offered by a job that enriched her employers immeasurably. This brilliant sister who is unrivaled as a fundraiser had long possessed an internal urge to break away and start her own business. I am sure that there were a legion of friends and family members who did their best to silence Regina’s self-doubt. I have no doubt that Regina tired of my constant refrain of “Maybe, God is trying to tell you something” when she accomplished a difficult task for her employer. Yet, I meant what I repeatedly stated. God, in his own way, had told Regina for the longest time that it was time for her to become an entrepreneur.

Although I am sure that God loves Regina Alhassan, I do not for a second believe that he loves her so much that he only speaks to her. He certainly speaks to the rest of the world on a continuous basis. As for myself, one of the things that God has repeatedly emphasized to me is the belief that “We (humans) are inextricably linked with one another.”

The arrival of COVID-19 aka coronavirus that has infected over 95,000 people and killed 3,200 is yet another reminder that “We are inextricably linked with each other.”

Domestically, there have been nearly 250 cases with 17 deaths attributed to the coronavirus. The following states have all reported cases of the virus that many fear will become a pandemic: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.

For me, these developments birth an understandable question of “What is God trying to tell humans?

I believe that the message is that “You are all inextricably linked.”

It is ironic that Americans who during advantageous moments promote the “inalienable rights” that Thomas Jefferson highlighted in the Declaration of Independence frequently resist the notion that at its best, America serves the interests of its citizenry. Despite their stern protestations, it is impossible to effectively argue that their resistance to universal healthcare plan is a parcel of the U.S. government serving its citizens’ best interests. From my perspective, it is this failure to realize that “We are all inextricably linked” that has created the cavernous opening being exploited by the coronavirus.

This moment appears to be the perfect storm to produce untold damage not only within this nation, but also around the globe. Consider for a moment what the absence of universal healthcare means for poor and working-class Americans. In the event that they do become infected, they will go undiagnosed.

I am sure that you are wondering “How does this impact the lives of others?”

Well, when poor and working-class people are sick, they tend to resist calling off of work and missing a much-needed paycheck; they simply cannot afford to do so as they are the working poor who are already “living paycheck to paycheck.” This desperation to secure money threatens to expose untold others to the virus. Despite what American elites may think, history reveals that their financial status will not protect them from this virus. In fact, the virus may be personally delivered to their kitchen or bedroom by servants whose sole function is to serve their financial superiors.

I have little doubt that “God is trying to tell us something.” And no faith that Americans’ as a whole are listening to the admonishments. Instead of heeding God’s warning regarding the dangers inherent in humans not taking care of each other, far too many American elites behave as if their kind are protected from such things.

What a silly and foolish people they are proving to be by their inability to recognize when the chickens come home to roost.
